Yangji Ski Trip

I’ve been snowboarding a few times this past winter, but the last excursion was one of the most fun. Two Korean teachers at my school (Glen and Jean) were heading up to Yangji Mountain for night skiing after teaching. Graciously, they invited us foreign teachers along as well. In the end, we had quite the crew. Jean and Glen drove while Anton, James, Dave and Dave’s friend Paul came along for the ride.

We embarked around 11 pm and arrived with time to spare – as we were doing the midnight shift. The mountain was fantastically close – especially with the use of two vehicles. We first made a pit stop at a rental shop for gear and boards. It was here that I chose to clothe myself in camo-inspired duds. Once arriving at the mountain, I think everyone was impressed with the lack of people. We had probably chosen the best (or worst) time to ski. It was rainy…and slightly warm. Needless to say, the slopes weren’t great but it certainly didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit!

It was Dave’s first time to board – ever – and only the second time for Anton. James hadn’t skied for over a year. So excitement was high – as well as energy levels. Honestly, it was fun to tear down the empty hills – in spite of the lousy conditions. No line-ups are always grand. I started to tire around 2:30 in the morning…while most of the others continued on till just after 3. I did one last run with the guys – and that was the best. James actually filmed me as I went down – and the resulting video was pretty sweet. I gotta get a hold of that footage.

The car ride home was warm and quiet. Peaceful. It had started to rain in full effect at this point so everyone was content to sleep. We arrived home around 5 am if I’m correct. A totally satisfying trip. Thank you Jean and Glen!

I’ll be back soon.

Peace!

-Paul
