Halloween at School ‘08

Thursday and Friday of last week were special days. Halloween took over the classrooms and hallways of JLS. Because classes are organized Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Tuesday, Thursday it meant we were required to be festive twice over. It might sound easy in theory but it was anything but simple when put to practice.

The students seemed to transform under these strange circumstances – almost werewolf like – destroying in the name of candy. This caused stress – and tiredness. I felt as though I had to keep up with the exaggerated energy levels of the students – only exacerbating my own fatigue. Now as much as I seem to be complaining – I had fun. Lots of fun. I owe much of this fun to Lucy teacher.

I followed her lead to the costume store in advance of Halloween where I came across a splendid outfit. I was soon to become a Korean grim reaper. From what I understand, this character would escort dead souls into another world. I was attracted to this costume because of its ‘Korean-ness.’ I liked the idea of being something you couldn’t find back home. Thankfully, Lucy was able to take the costume to the next level – and help with makeup. I never would have even thought to apply makeup but it really added that much needed touch…

In fact, some of the younger students were actually scared of me! They would run away when I came near! I never really thought of myself as a scary individual so this was a novel concept for me. The makeup was creepy for sure so I can understand a little bit. In retrospect, it was fun to dress up. I never was that excited about dressing up for Halloween in the past – but I have to admit it’s kinda fun to pretend to be someone else for a day. That said, it’s work. I know that I was certainly glad to take it all off Friday evening and come home for a shower.

I know the kids had fun too. I played games with them and supplied their candy desires. I realize that Halloween is kind of a strange thing to celebrate here in Korea – but I feel Korean kids need an excuse to relax and have fun – so I’m willing to embrace Halloween too. This might be the only time in there life they get to go “trick-or-treating” or dress up. So then, let loose. The only problem is, I think my nerves were let loose by the end of it all as well. It’s pretty hard to play a game with your class when everyone is constantly banging on your door – demanding candy.

In all it all, Halloween ’08 was worth it – but I’m kinda glad it’ll be my last in Korea. Other JLS Halloweens have been fun as well – but not as involving. If you remember – I dressed up as a soccer player last time – not nearly as much work. I have to say, though, that the general feeling among the staff was a lot of fun this year. Many of the teachers dressed up - and that changed things. This year felt different as well because there’s more classes – with more students. It added to the general chaos in the hallways...

Enjoy the pictures!

Yeah dude, good description - Halloween was nuts - 2 days is definitely the most we could sustain that kind of candy-appeasing and overall energy expenditure - but it was fun for sure.
