I have not posted anything in the past few weeks. This is true. Why is that? Several things have slowed me down. First, my internet connection has been spotty lately – on again and off again. Second, I haven’t been doing much of anything exciting or interesting. Last, I’ve been full on lazy – and unmotivated. Now that’s out in the open, don’t expect too much from this post.
If I’m too summarize my life these past few weeks – I’d say busy and yet relaxed at the same time. How’s that possible then? I’ve found myself going out more and seeing people and yet staying home at times on the weekends. If I’m fair – I probably have been trying too hard to have fun. This means intense nights with rough mornings and then chilled afternoons.
Next month will bring some changes as my school will undergo a semester change. As a result, I’ll have a bunch of new classes, while losing others – resulting in a different work schedule. Basically, I’ll be starting later and finishing later. Still pretty nice setup - if you ask me. We’ve also got a few new teachers – two of which are male. These guys are great fun – and I’ve been out a few times already with them. Glad to have more male presence in a school dominated by Korean women.
Actually, one JLS worker whom I was friends with just returned to Korea for the Christmas break. A very unexpected but pleasant surprise. James was studying in New Zealand. It’s nice to talk to someone with a true kiwi accent – kinda feels like a scene out of Flight of the Concords. I hope to see more of him as well – as he’s here only for a few months.
I’ll end today with a funny story in one of my classes. There’s an endless list of bizarre and hilarious stories that happen all the time in class – but I made a point to remember this one – as I honestly had a hard time teaching afterwards…in a good way though.
When I entered the class, the students were on break. This was an older class – grade six students – and mature for their age. Anyway, one student (Calvin) was talking to someone on his cell phone. I jokingly asked him if it was his girlfriend. He didn’t reply but another student told me it was a girl. Calvin hung up the phone shortly after – and I got the class started.
Later, in the class, I asked Calvin a question. When he wasn’t paying attention (he was talking to another student) I teasingly asked him if he was talking to his girlfriend again. Immediately afterwards, another student (Peter) looked right at me and said quite seriously, “Teacher, Calvin doesn’t have a girlfriend. He’s gay.” At that point, I lost it – I couldn’t stop laughing. The delivery was impeccable! Just so deadpan. I had to reign myself in – and continue with the class – although I did struggle. For the record, Calvin was not offended – and took it in stride. Like I said, this class is quite grown-up.
Hope that relieves some of the tedium! I hope to post more interesting content soon…
