Goodbye to a Great Class

Yesterday was Monday. And yesterday was the last time I will teach one my favourite classes. I had taught this class for over a year – and through several levels. However, they now have eventually gotten too old and too smart for me to teach them anymore. They have leveled up beyond my reach as a native teacher. I will miss them.

Right from the beginning, I loved them. In the past, they were situated right after one of my worst classes ever – and the contrast was striking – to say the least. This group was active, well-behaved and clever to boot! I think what made it all so worthwhile was the fact that they actually really liked me. Sometimes as a teacher, it’s hard to tell if you’re getting through or making any impact on their lives – yet their responses were immediate and always so upbeat.

Another reason they continually made my day was their enjoyment of simple games. Hang-man, Pictionary, and 7-Up all became instant hits – and never seemed to get old. Really though, it was about their ability to communicate. They were consistently able to supply me with interesting and descriptive stories. I certainly won’t forget them. Thinking back now, they truly were my saving grace after some nightmarish classes.

For the last class, I brought in some Canadian flags as a present – and – naturally – it was well received! I was pleased. I also bought some Korean snacks but they disappeared almost as soon as they hit the tables – I forgot how hungry grade 6 kids are! Near the end of class, we listened to and then sang the Canadian and Korean national anthems...respectively. It was good fun – as most other classes wouldn’t be bothered to try. Not this class! Just check the YouTube clips!

Until next time then!
